The inspiration for Enkindle came from the rich and spicy flavors that are often overlooked in the world of chocolate. Ion Avram wanted to create a product that would target a more adventurous and limited audience, compared to the traditional sweet chocolates. The visual interpretation of the spicy flavors is evident in the graphic elements, such as the eyes represented on the cover, which generate a strong sensory reaction.
Enkindle is not just a box of chocolates; it is a storytelling experience. When unfolded, the two boxes transform into a pop-up card that reveals the illustrated story of the product in three-dimensional cutouts. The inner side of the packaging is designed with direct cutouts in the shape of a volcano for the chili flavor and a gold bar treasure for the lemon and pepper flavor. These cutouts allow for a tantalizing glimpse of the mini-tablets inside, turning them into integral elements of the box design.
The realization of Enkindle involves meticulous attention to detail. The box is made of cardboard, with a die-cut design that allows for efficient transportation of the unfolded boxes. The pattern of the box is printed in CMYK, with two Pantone colors added for extra vibrancy. The finishing touches include a matte coating and hot foil in red and gold, adding a touch of luxury to the packaging.
Enkindle's dimensions are 35cm x 23cm x 2cm when folded and 35cm x 23cm x 1cm for each box. The chocolate mini-tablets measure 5cm x 5cm, making them the perfect bite-sized treat.
What sets Enkindle apart is its dual function as both a delicious treat and a narrative object. The pop-up card design and the chocolate itself are intended to be given as gifts, creating a memorable and surprising experience for the recipient. The unique combination of two different flavors in two separate boxes adds to the allure and excitement of the product.
The Enkindle project started in November 2019 and was completed in January 2020 in Bucharest. Extensive research was conducted to ensure the originality of the pop-up box concept, specifically in the FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) industry. The team also explored the idea of linking chocolate with non-sweet ingredients within a story concept, and found no existing examples.
Enkindle presented its fair share of challenges. The main hurdle was designing the shape of the box to be visually appealing both when closed and open as a book. Additionally, sizing the cutouts on the inside of the box to perfectly showcase the chocolate mini-tablets required careful consideration.
Enkindle has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills. Enkindle's incorporation of art, science, design, and technology contributes to an improved quality of life, making it a truly exceptional product.
Enkindle is a testament to Ion Avram's talent and creativity in merging art, design, and gastronomy. With its visually stunning packaging and unique storytelling experience, Enkindle is sure to ignite the senses and leave a lasting impression.
